Paganini Caprice 24 played by Ann Fontanella (arranged by Leopold Auer) . Paganini Caprice 24 gets increasingly difficult as the eleven variations progress, culminating in the Carpice’s highly-virtuosic 11th variation. Paganini wrote his Carprices to practice his various techniques and the Caprice 24’s variations emphasize different virtuoso violin techniques. The original microphone was poor quality and static noise was digitally removed from the recording. Other than that, there were no sound edits to this live performance. Played on Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 at a performance/fund raiser for the National Croquet Center.

2I can tell you listen to Heifitz a lot, by listening to your chaconne and this. Really pretty artificial harmonics

3I love how you play so that it sounds like there are 3 violins. Coordinating 2 simultaneous strings/notes is hard enough, but 3?? bravo!

4Yes, they are long and slender. She had suugested that I instead start on the viola, or even cello. But I like violin’s sound better. Thankyou!!

5Not at all! Are you fingers slender? That is all that really counts and even then - not always. Perlman has huge fingers and hands!!

7Would having long fingers be a disadvantage for violin playing? My gf thinks the fact that I have them is going to make it harder for me to play…

11Oh my goodness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was far to amazing for words to describe!!! I have to come to one of your shows one day! This was just incredible as is all of your work. But this piece, the way you played, sounded like a chorus of violins. Absolutely beautiful! How did you get started playing the Violin?

13Scryabin, I know - it was a camera microphone, so that made it difficult. The concert was quite impromptu so we didn’t have all the equipment necessary for the full production :)…

16PleaseTalkEnglish, I know! But it was a last minute concert - literally, I only knew about it two days before!
So I couldn’t bring a pianist, so I had to play it closer to the original (except the last two variations! :)). Since Paganini wrote it initially solo, it was possible…but it is better with piano, definitely!

17Hey Ann! I see you’ve put out a new Paganini caprice. Nicely done. Only critique I’d say is that the room you recorded this in doesn’t do your tone justice - acoustics are dead with no reverb to carry that lush-plush tone ;0
Amazing playing as always

20Ann, thanks so much for your videos, I definitely have learned from them - even though I am studying guitar, not violin. I heard Nancy Zhou here in San Antonio (have you heard of her?) this past weekend, and the encore was this same Paganini Caprice 24! Thanks to this video I knew what to expect.

21Ann! That was just FANTASTIC. BRAVISSIMA!!!!
I know how hard that piece is technically, and not only did you have complete command of all the different techniques in the left and right hands, but you managed to play it in a very musical way. What beauty!
Grazie for my inspiration of the day!!

23@Annfontanella Ha, no that’s probably what I’m doing wrong. I sometimes wanna get through the piece that minor mistakes that sound kind of sloppy…I kinda just disregard…say whatever, and move on. So I’ll start doing that!
I started playing violin when I was 5…but I was TERRIBLE. Then switched to viola at 11. I’m 15 now. I just picked violin back up. But viola still my main
But thanks for the advice

25Metamurph, I have to admit the Heifetz Paganini 24th caprice video is my favorite. I feel that Hahn is a bit too slow for my taste. Ricci sometimes plays a little toooo harshly for my taste. Heifetz has such elegance and tosses off everything so simply. What’s not to love?
:)
